What is Family Counseling?

Family counseling is a type of therapy that focuses primarily on issues concerning overall family functioning. This type of counseling emphasizes that your family relationships are a key factor in your psychological health. Even though you personally may be experiencing a problem, often it can affect your relationships with others. And conversely, problematic relationships can often lead someone to experience problems with their own functioning.

The goals of family counseling are to improve the quality of familial relationships, to address problems within interpersonal relationships, to address family dysfunction, and to support the enhancement of your emotional well-being. Family counseling endeavors to approach your concerns by looking at your entire network of relationships, with a special emphasis on assessing your social support network. A social support network consists of your circle of friends, your family, and anyone in your life that provides you with support, praise, and help on a regular basis. People who are without a social support network, or who do not fully use their sources of support, often find themselves having a harder time dealing with life’s problems.

At NPS, we can help you to identify your sources of social support, and put together a network of your own. We can also help you to examine your existing social support network and teach you how to put it to use for the best possible outcomes.
